Welcome to the second article in our series on AI-generated art! In our previous piece, we introduced you to the concept of diffusion models and gave you an overview of AI image generation. Now, it's time to put that knowledge into practice.
Today, we're going to walk you through signing up for InstaSD, launching your first ComfyUI instance, and creating your very first AI-generated image. Don't worry if some of these terms still feel unfamiliar – we'll guide you through each step.
Here's what we'll cover:
Signing up for an InstaSD account
Launching your first ComfyUI instance
Navigating the ComfyUI interface
Using a simple SDXL workflow to generate an image
Let's get started on your journey to becoming an AI artist!
Signing Up for InstaSD:
Before we can start creating images, we need to set up your InstaSD account. On InstaSD go to the the Signup page and create your account or login in if you already have an account.
Once your account is set up and verified, you're ready to log in and start your AI art journey!
Launching your first ComfyUI instance:
Once you've logged into InstaSD, you'll see a list of ready-to-go workflows. Let's start with a simple SDXL workflow to create your first image. Don't worry about the terminology for now – we'll cover all that in future articles.
In the search bar, type "SDXL" and look for the workflow named "SDXL With Refiner".
Click on "Add to your Instances" next to this workflow. This action creates a copy of the workflow in your personal workspace.
You'll be taken to your instances page. Here, find the newly added SDXL workflow.
To begin, click on the "Start Instance" button next to the workflow.
A dropdown will appear asking you to choose an instance size. Select "Small" for this exercise.
Wait patiently while InstaSD sets up the ComfyUI environment for your workflow. This process usually takes a couple of minutes.
Once ready, you'll see the ComfyUI interface load in your browser window.
Navigating the ComfyUI interface:
Now that your instance is up and running, let's take a quick tour of the ComfyUI interface:
The Canvas: In the center of your screen, you'll see a collection of connected boxes. These are called "nodes", and together they form your workflow. Think of this as a recipe for your AI-generated image.
Workflow Controls: On the right side of the screen, you'll find the ComfyUI controls. For now, focus on the "Queue Prompt" button – this is what you'll click to run your workflow and generate an image.
Zoom and Pan: You can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the workflow. Click and drag to pan around the canvas if you need to see different parts of the workflow.
Node Information: If you hover over a node, you'll see a tooltip with more information about what that node does.
Using a simple SDXL workflow to generate an image:
Now, let's break down this workflow and create your first AI-generated image:
Starting Point: On the far left, find the "Load Checkpoint" node. This loads the SDXL model – the AI's artistic brain.
Prompt Nodes: To the right of the checkpoint, you'll see two "CLIP Text Encode" nodes. These translate your written instructions into something the AI can understand:
Positive Prompt: What you want to see in the image. In this case, it's set to create a glass bottle with a galaxy inside.
Negative Prompt: What you don't want in the image. This helps refine the output.
Canvas Setup: Below the prompts, there's an "Empty Latent Image" node. Think of this as the AI's blank canvas.
The Artist at Work: The "KSampler" nodes act like our AI artist, using the prompts and model to transform the blank canvas into an image.
Finishing Touches: The "VAE Decode" node at the end turns the AI's internal representation into a viewable image.
Now, let's bring your image to life:
Click the "Queue Prompt" button on the right side of the screen.
Watch as a green border appears around each node, showing the AI's progress.
A progress bar will appear under the "Queue Prompt" button, keeping you updated.
After a short wait, your galaxy bottle image will appear on the right side of the screen.
Congratulations! You've just created your first AI-generated image!
Take some time to admire your creation. Feel free to run the workflow again – you might get slightly different results each time due to the nature of AI generation.
Important: When you're done exploring, remember to turn off your instance using the menu at the bottom of the screen.
Summary:
Congratulations on generating your first AI image with ComfyUI! You've now experienced firsthand how the concepts we discussed in the previous article come together in practice. You've launched a ComfyUI instance, navigated its interface, and used a pre-configured workflow to create an image.
This hands-on experience lays the groundwork for more advanced techniques we'll explore in future articles. Remember, the key to improving is experimentation – try different prompts and see how they affect your results.
